Board Policy: Cell phone use during class time
Please review the updated cell phone policy with your child. Cell phone use during class time: To foster a learning environment that is free from distractions, the Board of Trustees of the Escondido Union High School District adopted a new board policy on Nov. 12, 2024, that prohibits students from using cell phones during instructional time. Cell phones should be turned off and put away during the instructional period (class time). The policy enumerates the types of mobile communication devices that cannot be used during instructional time to include “cell phones, smart watches, pagers, or other mobile communication devices, including earbuds.” The policy allows for exceptions that would permit cell phone use during certain circumstances, such as emergencies or threats of danger or when required for medical or educational needs as documented by a licensed physician or a student’s individualized education plan. Under the policy, students may use their cell phones during non-instructional time, such as at breaks and at lunch. The State of California recently adopted the Phone-Free School Act, mandating that school districts throughout the state limit or prohibit the use of cell phones during class. The EUHSD policy conforms to the new state law, although it should be noted that the Board of Trustees initiated the development of its policy prior to the state mandate. As families of San Pasqual High School and the Escondido community, we appreciate your support with the new cell phone policy and ask you to also speak to your student at home about expectations of cell phone use during class time at SPHS.
Dress Code
Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately and within the established dress code for high school each day. All students must wear clothing which is clean, safe and in good repair. The clothing should promote the health and welfare of the wearer. Student dress, personal appearance, and conduct are expected to be of such character and decency as not to disrupt or distract from the instructional process, nor diminish the disciplinary control of the teacher. The two standards of the Dress Code are modesty and safety. The dress code is the same at all EUHSD high schools. The dress code expectations have been set by our community of Escondido.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend school daily and to be in their classroom before the 8:30 start of instructional time. Please make every effort to be on time each day as it is a disruption to others who are on time and ready to learn. Being on time is a life skill and we ask for you to speak to your child about your expectation for them to be on time.
Late to Class disruptions (Tardy)
During the school day students have a full 10 minute “passing period” to get to their next class. We also have a three minute “warning bell” to also help remind them to get going to class. During nutrition break our students have a full 20 minutes to get to their next class and during lunch break students have a full 40 minutes to get to their next class!
